How To Remove Cured Expanding Foam

BoxheadTim

I just made a very unpleasant discovery, namely that the PO of our firm stock-still some drafts into the garage (the one they used as a office) with expanding cream.

That fixed the draft alright, and it also glued the berkeleying door shut. And so much for "just remove the insulation we put confronting the door, hook upward the garage door opener and you're good". I managed to clean up and break the seal effectually 3/4th of the door, only the remaining part has seen very generous awarding of the foam, right downwards to encasing one of the wheels and the rail in a ton of foam.

Is at that place anything that can deliquesce the cured foam, without at the aforementioned time dissolving the door, the wheel and killing me a and a bunch of polar bears?

A least this answered the question nobody enquire, namely "who'd gum a garage door shut with expanding foam?" The people we bought a business firm from .

information technology can be some tough stuff... I used information technology in insulating my kitchen.. which, due to sparse walls, I had to practise in 2 inch hard foam.. I used the expanding stuff to fill the gaps..

BoxheadTim

I found this stuff on the Dwelling house Depot site, probably going to give it a try tomorrow: http://world wide web.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202103458/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-ane&keyword=expanding+foam+remover&storeId=10051

whatever spray paint i tried to paint it with

moparman76_69

Try spraying it with Lead blaster? Information technology dissolves Styrofoam cups.

Pressure washer? Any idea what that stuff is made of? If it is some sort of closed cell polyurethane, solvents will not have much, if any, event.

BoxheadTim

My estimate is that it's the standard expanding cream sold at the likes of Lowes Depot etc.

If it does plow out to exist polyurethane, it won't dissolve by whatever solvent merely a polar solvent might dissolve some of its composition making information technology peachy and go, which would help with mechanical removal.

Kill it with burn!

Wait, don't exercise that. That is a bad idea.

patgizz

i've yet to discover anything that dissolves the cured cream except UV low-cal. sunlight kills it.

acetone cleans upward uncured as will lacquer thinner. but cured stuff is a bear. stays on clothes forever, wear it off your hands over a week or and so, etc...

don't become it on annihilation yous don't desire it on for a very long time.

ultraclyde

expanding foam IS polyurethane. And no, yous're stuck with information technology. I tried every solvent known to man with no luck

BoxheadTim

Stuck with it ways that unless I can mechanically remove information technology, I'chiliad looking at getting a double garage door replaced. There goes the 911 budget, I'd approximate...

OA torch, SO on burn watch w/ garden hose and 911 on speed punch

Polyurethane produces highly toxic chemicals when burned. So probably don't desire to practise this.

Give a powerful pressure washer a try though. If y'all experience y'all already might have to replace the door, you lot don't accept too much to loose past diggings it right?

BoxheadTim

Actually I figure if I tin can get the door panels unglued, a decent garage door company should be able to bend a rails to match and so replace the wheels that run in the the track, no?

Forcefulness it open, I bet the foam bonds break before a bonded aluminum door.

BoxheadTim

I'm fairly confident I tin can get a putty knife in betwixt the door and the frame to break the bond. The main effect is that the lesser of the door track is encased in a large blob of foam that encases the lesser cycle and the track.

I'll make another endeavor tomorrow with more tools and hope I can complimentary the whole thing up, otherwise it might exist fourth dimension to call a garage door visitor.

In respond to BoxheadTim:

An art shop "hot wire cutter" might go you closer to the parts you lot want to keep. Google that term and you lot will find one from sears for about sixty bucks.

Other than that, your idea to replace the tracks should piece of work. What a bunch of E36 M3.

I almost bought a house with a garage like that once....

The hot wire cutter seems similar information technology might piece of work. Is it possible to remove or partially remove the door tracks to get access? What you found seems probable to work. It's besides bad that MEK is restricted and so severly, this sounds like something MEK would make short piece of work of. It melts plastic speedily.

Stick a wire cycle on a 4" angle grinder, information technology will get that crap off.
